A few years ago, Daouda’s wife was about to give birth to another child. He told her that if it was a boy, she could choose the name. but if it was a girl, he wanted to name her.
A baby girl was born and Daouda named her Roxaya Jana.
Jana was my roommate when I lived in the village. Her Senegalese name was ‘Roxaya’, just as mine is ‘Khady’. So Daouda named his daughter after Jana… twice. 🙂
Jana, meet your turando (‘namesake’ in Wolof). She’s an adorable little girl and it was an honor to meet her (and buy her cookies) on your behalf.
